Big Buts

Remember that scene from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, where Pee-Wee and Simone are sitting and talking inside the head of that big dinosaur sculpture?

-- Simone: "You're right, but... "

-- Pee-Wee: "But what!? Everyone I know has a big but. Come on, Simone. Let’s talk about your big but."

Too many people these days seem to have a big but about capitalism and the free market. All over the news you hear people saying that they are big believers in the free market, but this economic crisis calls for drastic measures (i.e. government bailout).

Listen, either capitalism works, or it doesn't. Either the free market is the way to prosperity and liberty, or it is not. An economic crisis is not time for big buts. If there was ever a good time to embrace free markets and capitalism, it is now. If we are ever going to see our bright shiny bikes again, we are going to have to get off our buts, and let the free market do its thing.

Haha. Excellent. I Love PeeWee.

BUT, there really are legitimate big butts when it comes to capitalism aren't there?

For instance, Monopolies being broken up, rules and regulations. Pure capitalism would be a no holds barred cage match to the death wouldn't it?

BUT I do agree that all these bailouts seem like very bad ideas. But, I don't know a damn thing about the economy so I'm just speculating.

I was also hoping for your explanation of why you think fiscal conservatism means less rules for business and social conservatism means more rules for individuals.

Latah brutha. Blog is shaping up nicely.

Great question about cage-match-capitalism. I will need to gather some info on this, but let me give it a try. First, our perception of big bad capitalism was part of our public school indoctrination, and I bought it lock stock and barrel. Specifically, it was covered in American History when we were fed an extremely distorted account of the Great Depression and its causes.

Capitalism and the Free Market did not fail. Our government failed us. Most, if not all, monopolies are created when a government begins to regulate and/or show favors to a specific industry or business. See Milton Friedman's "Capitalism and Freedom” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitalism_and_freedom

Free Trade inside and among nations is the best cure for monopolies, and the best prescription for liberty.
